According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ (ASPS) annual report, men accounted for approximately six percent of all cosmetic procedures in the United States. While this percentage is low in comparison to women, rates of patient growth for procedures targeting the chest, core, face, and neck outpaced female rates year over year, suggesting that more men are considering plastic surgery.
“We’ve certainly seen more and more men consider plastic surgery procedures, and it’s becoming more socially acceptable for men to want to look their very best,” says Sacha Obaid, M.D., of North Texas Plastic Surgery. “Speaking with a board-certified plastic surgeon can help you realize the potential of plastic surgery and give you a youthful refresh.”
Here are some of the common plastic surgeries men have been getting:
Liposuction is a procedure to eliminate stubborn body fat in any part of the body, like the man’s arms, neck, chin, cheeks, thighs, hips, chest, abdomen, waist, buttocks, or love handles (excess skin around the hips).
This surgery is formally known as gynecomastia and is often used to help treat the effects of hormone imbalance, where elevated levels of estrogen cause larger breasts. Gynecomastia can also target male breasts caused by obesity and any other issues related to firming up saggy skin.
Eyelid surgery is formally called blepharoplasty and is one of the most popular facial plastic surgeries for men. The procedure can be performed on either the lower or upper eyelid, or both.
During the procedure, the plastic surgeon will make tiny incisions in your eyelid’s natural creases to reduce visible scarring. Then, they remove the excess tissue and tighten that region. Patients considering blepharoplasty often look to resolve issues related to:
Puffy eyelids caused by excess fat
Sagging skin that impairs vision
Drooping eyelids
Eye bags
Wrinkles around the lower eyelid
The nose defines the face even more than the eyes in most cases and can highlight the cheeks, eyes, and mouth. But when it is out of balance, the entire face will look less attractive. Men elect rhinoplasty (nose surgery) procedures to help enhance and anchor their facial features.
Weight loss journeys do not always eliminate excess skin around the stomach. This is where abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedures come in. During an abdominoplasty, surgeons eliminate excess skin around the stomach, making it firm and improving the muscle and contour definition.
Many men elect to have an abdominoplasty for aging, cosmetic, muscle repair, and weight loss purposes.
For men, healing is a different process than it is for women. Men’s skin is 25 percent thicker than that of women because of their high testosterone levels. This means men can experience an extended period of swollen skin after their surgeries.
However, the case is different for facial surgeries because men have more blood vessels and better blood circulation to boost the healing process. Therefore, their facial healing journeys are shorter.
A strong consultation starts with clarity, not confidence. Before meeting a surgeon, write down the specific changes you want and what is driving them, whether it is fitness goals, aging, or a feature that has always bothered you. Bring reference photos only as a guide, not a blueprint, since every face and body has different limits.
It also helps to share your routine, including workouts, supplements, and any past injuries, because these details affect planning. Ask what outcome is realistic, what trade-offs exist, and how long results usually hold. When expectations are honest and measurable, the decision feels less like chasing a trend and more like investing in yourself.
Men, especially those who are health-conscious, are now understanding that they can improve their aesthetic and even look younger through surgical improvements. Although the reasons behind their plastic surgery journeys vary, some just want to keep up with their younger friends or coworkers. Whatever the reason might be, there are plenty of ways to take advantage of this growing trend.
