Miami is one of those cities where you will spend days and never step outside the city. It has beautiful white sand beaches, its nightlife is hectic, and its food is diverse; thus, it is easy to get caught up in all that the city offers. But during my last visit, after settling in one of the incredible mansions for rent in Miami Florida, that are rented out, I decided to venture out and see what was just a little bit beyond the city line. It was actually one of the best choices I ever made.
In case you are in Miami and feel like trying something fresh, there are so many jewels just a drive away. Whether it's tranquil nature escapes or cultural artefacts, these day trips offer a completely new South Florida that is just as exciting as Miami itself.
My first stop was the Everglades, and it was like visiting a new world. This sea of wetlands is wild, spectacular, and serene beyond description and is only an hour away from the city. I took an air boat ride, and the thrill of going at lightning speed across the water on top of the water with the wind blowing in my face is something I will never forget.
Alligators basked on the banks, egrets were in the air, and at one point, we also had a turtle that swam with us. I went early in the day so that I could avoid the tourists, and it made it all the more special that it was that much more intimate. It was so great to have this escape from the bustle of Miami, and I was reminded just how much diversity there is in the landscapes of Florida.
Two mad days in the city, and I was craving a less manic beach day. This is when I went to Key Biscayne, which is just a short drive across the Rickenbacker Causeway. It is technically still near Miami, but in some way, it feels totally out of the ordinary mess.
The beaches are quieter, the water is smooth, and it has that laid-back island vibe that you can never beat. I rented a bicycle, went and rode the trails at Crandon Park, and baked on the beach all day with only a few people around. In case you want to visit a place where you can spend your time in a calmer atmosphere without the need to travel far, this is your place.
Vizcaya is still in Miami, yet it is like a place of another era. Entering the mansion was like entering a piece of European history. It has this old-world sophistication, which is difficult to find in the States, through the architecture, old furniture, and art.
My favorite thing was the gardens by far. They are scenically designed, even with fountains, statues, and secret walking paths. It is the type of place where you can just walk around, take pictures, and spend a full half-day in it. When you feel like taking a break at the beach, but you also do not want to be forced to travel far, then Vizcaya is the answer.
Fort Lauderdale is about 40 minutes north of Miami, and its atmosphere is different; I enjoyed it. The city is not so crowded, but it has excellent beaches and a bustling downtown. In the morning, I strolled up and down Las Olas Boulevard, entered and left cafes and the shops, then went to the beach in the afternoon.
If you're living in one of the mansions for rent in Miami Florida, this is so easy a trip to make. It offers a fresh view of Florida's coastline without ever being too far away from home base.
For one of my more extended trips, I decided to drive down to the Keys, and honestly, the drive alone was worth it. The Overseas Highway is quite possibly the most lovely drive I've ever done, with unlimited turquoise ocean out as far as you can see on both sides. I went snorkeling in Key Largo and then pulled off the road and bought fresh seafood at Islamorada, then turned around and came back.
There is time to make the entire trip to Key West in one day, but even dividing the trip in half gives you plenty of that laid-back, tropical feel that the Keys are famous for.
Going back to one of the Miami Florida, mansions available for rent after these day excursions felt like second nature. Having so much room to relax, recharge, and schedule some me time works wonders for your holiday. I'd booked with Nightfall Group, and it was seamless from start to finish. Their rentals were exactly what I needed: intimate, private, and perfectly placed for touring both in Miami and the surrounding area.
And although these were the most important places I visited, there are some other places that should be highlighted:
Oleta River State Park: The quiet place to kayak and paddleboard, right north of the city.
Hollywood Beach: Family-style beach community, has a wonderful boardwalk and laid-back atmosphere.
Big Cypress National Preserve: In case you would like something less wild than the Everglades, with equally stunning wildlife and scenery.
Each one of them contributed something different to the journey and provided me with motives as to why I would like to go back and see even more.
1. How near are most day trip destinations to Miami?
Most are under an hour, like Key Biscayne and Fort Lauderdale, but places like the Keys will be two to three hours, depending on how far you go.
2. Do I have to rent a car?
Yes. While Miami's public transportation is good, most of these day trips require a car for ease and flexibility.
3. Would these sites be good for families?
Absolutely! The Everglades, Key Biscayne, and Hollywood Beach are family- and kid-friendly.
4. Can I visit multiple places in a day?
You can. For example, combining a morning at Vizcaya with an afternoon at Key Biscayne is perfectly acceptable if you time things right.
If you're traveling to Miami, don't limit yourself to the city alone. Spending some time going out and viewing it around releases a whole new aspect of South Florida, which is equally as exciting and unforgettable.
A combination of these tours and staying in one of the luxury vacation rentals Miami Florida will be a good outing, along with some rest. To me, two aspects of the journey were adventurous on the one hand and restorative on the other, as I got a chance to go home in the evening to my own place, a comfortable milieu.
Miami is more than beaches and nightlife; it is the gateway to sublime day trips when you are off the beaten track and adventures (of which you will be talking about long after you are back home).
