Cancun is often dismissed by budget travelers because of its overall status as a tourist spot for the wealthy. And this is true up to some extent because at the surface you only see luxury resorts, big nightclubs, and costly dining places. But budget Cancun holidays are very much possible if you know how to wisely spend your money in the city.

So, worry not; I am here with some secret tips to help you plan and execute a Cancun vacation without breaking the bank. Before we get into the details of our topic today, I have an important piece of information for the first-timers: look for affordable Cancun Holiday Packages from the UK so you get everything included in it.

Plan a Cheap Cancun Holiday with These Tips

Always Travel in Low Season

This is the most important tip that I would suggest to my readers. Cancun is eccentrically costly during its peak season from December to April. This is the peak season for most of the South American region because many events like Christmas, New Year and spring break come in it.

So, as a result, you end up paying a lot more in terms of airfare, hotel rooms, car rentals and even food prices. I don't want this to happen to any of my reading and this is why I would suggest making your Cancun travel plans during the months of May, June, September and October.

The reasons are quite simple: the crowds are low and this leads to reduced prices all over the city. If you book in advance and act wisely, you can even get a room in a high-end resort at the cost of a cheap hotel.

Keep Your Belly and Pocket Both Full

Mexican food is a haven for foodies and meat lovers but things can quickly get out of pocket if you are not careful while selecting the place from which you eat. Back in history, there were no fancy restaurants or big names in the country. The real Mexican taste developed and thrived at small food stalls and streetside kitchens.

I would suggest staying away from places that give you an upscale vibe. The best areas for great and pocket-friendly food are Mercado 23 and Mercado 28. The shops here offer classics like panuchos, sopa de lima and cochinita pibil.

The best thing about the food scene in Cancun is that there are many places that offer a three-course lunch at an extremely cheap price with a perfect taste. If you stick to these places, I am pretty sure that you will save a lot.

Get Accommodation in Downtown or Hotel Zone Hostel

This is the most crucial and important tip on this page. So, make sure you follow it to the core. Firstly, stay away from high-end and flashy places like waterfront resorts or big hotels. They'll empty your pockets even before you know it.

The best way to keep your vacations inside your budget is to opt for places like hotels, hostels and guesthouses around the famous areas like Parque de las Palapas, Avenida Yaxchilán and the ADO bus station. They are quite near to all the tourist spots and you can get a bus easily.

I stayed at Nomads and it was a great experience, and that too under my pocket. The best thing I loved about the place was the rooftop bar and pool. I never thought that I would get these facilities at such a low price. One of my friends mentioned Hotel Náder. It is a great place too but I couldn't find rooms there as all of them were already taken up. The second one is best for families and honeymooners, as the rooms are quite big and extremely comfortable as well.

If you want another place and want to keep the cost low, go for a place in the downtown area as it is substantially lower-priced than other famous spots. Food and rooms are highly cheap there.

Transport - A Big Money Eater

Your battle with cost starts the moment you land in Cancun. I made the mistake of getting a taxi to reach downtown instead of the red ADO buses. These cost around 1/3rd of what I paid for the taxi and honestly, they are more punctual and comfortable.

From there you can take another bus that takes you to the hotel zone. From downtown and the hotel zone, you can get a bus from lines R-1, R-2 and R-27 around every ten minutes. Plus, you don't have to negotiate fair prices.

And if you want to explore Cancun and its surrounding areas, you don't need to get a taxi or a private vehicle. You can do great in a colectivo, that is how locals get around for their work. They might be a bit late, but they are super cheap. The most famous station for colectivos is located right across from the ADO bus stations.

Visit Only the Free Beaches

When it comes to Cancun, there is no shortage of beaches, and a day at sea is a must to explore the natural beauty of the city.

The thing I loved most about Cancun beaches is that they are free and don't cost even a single penny. Even the beaches that are a part of resorts are free unless you use their chairs or umbrellas, which requires you to be the guest at the resort or have a day pass. So make sure that you have supplies packed before you leave for the beaches.

Final Words

Cancun may look costly and overpriced but if you follow the tips above, you will be able to plan a perfectly cheap holiday there. The money you save can be used for buying gifts or souvenirs for friends and family back home. If you are looking to plan a cheap Cancun holiday, reach out to Virikson Holidays now.
