When you think of food catering, or more specifically, the food that you would find at a wedding, what do you picture?

Typically, it is a buffet, with sausage rolls, coleslaw, sandwiches, chicken drumsticks, and so on. Needless to say, for many couples, this can be a bit uninspired when they are looking into food catering for their weddings, and if you are aiming to impress your guests, you may want something more on trend.

As bizarre as it sounds, there are food trends related to wedding catering that can help you get an idea of what will go down well and what may flop.

Interactive Food

When searching for catering for weddings, you may come across the new trend of catering becoming part of the entertainment for the wedding reception.

How? Guests can be shown the culinary (and fun) skill sets of chefs and cooks, which may range from open fire cooking to shucking oysters. This allows you and your guests to have an enjoyable, chatty segment to the reception, and to also potentially learn how to flambé!

Grazing Tables

Speaking of interaction, another trend that is hitting big in 2026 for wedding catering is grazing tables. This is when food is set out in an appetizing and artistic manner, to encourage a bit of mix and matching from your guests.

You may be wondering how this differs from a traditional buffet. With a buffet, the setup is purely functional and requires guests to plate the food. A grazing table is more communal, usually with no plates, and allows your guests to graze through your wedding reception.

Savory Cakes

If you have a sweet tooth, this may seem brutal, but a notable trend is the one of savory cakes for weddings. These can be presented as “tasty fakes” with cheeses stacked like a three-tier cake, or they could be a bit more basic but tasty, with one notable favorite this year being a beetroot cake. Again, if you have a sweet tooth, you may not want to invest too heavily in these, but they are still fun!

Eco-Friendly

It is easy to assume that eco-friendly means things like vegan foods, with paper straws, and serving coffee that is Fairtrade. That is indeed part of it, but when it comes to sourcing eco-friendly food, there are numerous options to consider beyond these.

For one, you can opt for hiring a catering team that only uses seasonal ingredients. This does mean that you won’t be able to have strawberries on your wedding cake if you get married in winter, but it does open the door to other, more interesting foods. For example, if you were to marry in winter, you could have foods for your wedding based around hardy root vegetables, such as beetroot and blood oranges.

You could even go eco-friendly in the presentation. Aim to use reclaimed or recycled crockery. You may even want to incorporate a zero-waste theme, so your guests know to eat all they take.

Even if you aren’t big on wedding trends, the aforementioned ideas can serve as a good starting point to make your wedding catering different, which will lead to your wedding reception being both fun and having tasty food.
